Context

In March 2024, I joined an Italian startup as a Junior UX Designer, tasked with enhancing the user experience and providing strong visual direction for the existing product while collaborating closely with the front- and back-end teams. My initial focus was to deeply understand the platform, its history, its user base, and the long-term vision of the founders to align my design work with the company’s strategic goals.
I first started by collecting and organizing the main elements with which the team had worked until then and created a seamless flow of the platform. No creative need at this point but intelligently clean the space and bring clarity.

Challenge

The original platform soon required a complete redesign to better align with the evolving dynamics of the startup. The challenge was to transform the visual identity while preserving core features and maintaining coherence with what existing users were already familiar with. The primary focus was on crafting engaging visuals that complemented the existing user flow while distinguishing the platform from the growing competition in the AI space.
With the product team, we worked around the new color palette and the upcoming new features to propose a new engaging visual identity to SylloTips. We first decided to keep implement a custom design system, partly using elements and icons of the Material Design library:

After reviewing other trending AI platform and keeping standards in mind, it was time to put some ideas on paper and get the first feels about this new identity.Every element or component created in this process was carefully reviewed by the Product team before being implemented in the main Figma flow and pushed to production.
Part of creating a brand new flow is also making sure the Figma file is intuitive enough for other teams and especially developers to gather what they need to push forward.

First results

SylloTips evolved into a more welcoming and engaging platform, with improvements in its visual design, including vibrant colors and added depth for better user engagement. Features were continuously enhanced to ensure users had all the tools they needed to accomplish their tasks efficiently. We carefully utilized space and white space to create a balanced layout that allowed content to breathe and remain accessible.
Each new feature or update was rigorously tested with real users, enabling us to gather immediate feedback and refine the experience further

Second results

After a few months with the new visual identity, we transitioned to a new design system: Shadcn. The team opted for this open-source solution due to its ability to provide consistency, simplicity, and a robust library of reusable components. This decision not only streamlined the design process but also significantly reduced the workload for front-end developers, enabling faster and more efficient implementation.

Personal thoughts

As the UX/UI designer, I am trying to get more directly involved with the ongoing user research that was taken care of by my colleague, bringing me user feedbacks. I know how much a direct contact with the users impacts our design process and wish to be more accurate in addressing their needs. You don’t get the full picture with word to mouth or risk missing significant non verbal cues.
